An experience of abduction is difficult for everyone involved, the children, both the left behind and abducting parents and extended friends and family. Parents are required to deal with sudden and unfamiliar legal processes that can be stressful, expensive and very consuming. Grief is often also felt by parents for various reasons such as the sudden change in family structure, being out of contact with a child, or due to being a victim of violence. Feelings of anxiety, uncertainty and a sense of ‘living in limbo’ are also characteristic of abduction.
Parents have different ways of coping with this extreme stress. For example, many parents find it beneficial to tell their story to others, or to focus on keeping busy or to record their thoughts in a journal.
I would like to invite forum participants to tell other parents what coping strategies they use. What works and what doesn’t work for you and what do you recommend to other parents who may be experiencing something similar?
