The Pacific: building capacity & networks

Numerous studies have described the widespread and severe social welfare issues found in some small Pacific nations, including the Solomon Islands, Kiribati and Vanuatu.

In trying to address these problems, many Pacific nations lack adequate capacity, such as trained social welfare or social work staff.

We believe that Australia, as a wealthy developed nation, has a clear responsibility to assist those most in need among its near neighbours.

ISS Australia is working with partners in the Pacific to develop a comprehensive capacity building program, that will boost the capacity of the responsible bodies in Pacific nations to tackle social welfare issues by means of training, skills transfer, mentoring, networking and other strategies.

ISS Australia is currently seeking donor support for a project that will pilot several innovative capacity building strategies in the Solomon Islands over a 12 month period, before unrolling similar approaches in other countries of the Pacific.

News and developments on ISS Australia’s involvement in the Pacific will be posted here, so please check back for further updates.
