Who can volunteer

We welcome the involvement of volunteers

By volunteering or undertaking a student placement with ISS Australia, you can make a vital contribution to our work in supporting children and families across international borders. We are an inclusive and supportive team. If you volunteer or undertake a placement with us, you are apart of our network and you will be encouraged to join us at seminars, training opportunities, and social events.

Our legal and social work services provide a supportive team environment dedicated to providing support and legal advice and assistance to parents experiencing stressful parental disputes and families experiencing cross border separation.

We are incredibly grateful for the support and commitment of students and volunteers in assisting with the delivery of our services.

We welcome interest from applicants of Aboriginal, Torres Strait Islander, culturally and linguistically diverse backgrounds, as well as people with disabilities. ISS Australia values the skills, experiences, and perspectives of people from our diverse communities.

How you can contribute

Service areas for volunteers

Legal service
The legal team provides legal advice and assistance to parents experiencing stressful parental disputes, particularly international parental child abduction. If you’d like more information on what we do, you can look at our page on International Parental Child Abduction. Our staff provide training and supervision for our volunteers to gain valuable legal experience in drafting legal applications, preparing research memos, and conducting intake sessions. If you’re a current law student or practical legal trainee based in New South Wales or Victoria who is interested in joining our team, please check our vacancies below.

Social Work Service
ISS Australia is committed to providing supportive placement opportunities for social work students to ensure a strong and skilled not for profit sector into the future.

Social work students on placement at ISS Australia are given practical experience, mentoring, supervision, and support to integrate their learning, theory and practice. Student placements at ISS Australia are arranged directly with field placement coordinators to ensure quality placement experiences and outcomes. We do not take placement enquiries or requests from individual students. Students who would like to undertake a placement at ISS Australia should approach their field placement coordinator at their educational institution.  ISS Australia’s social work service also supports volunteers. Social work volunteer vacancies are advertised below.

Volunteer Testimonials

Valerie (Social Work Student)

Undertaking my Social Work Placement at International Social Service (ISS) Australia was a life-changing and rewarding experience. I had the privilege of working with a number of clients to assist them in finding and reconnecting with their birth families. I was constantly supported by an amazing and dedicated team of social workers, who were just as passionate about the work as I was. Working with the team at ISS Australia has taught me a lot about myself, both personally and professionally. It has enhanced my passion for social work and has given me a new perspective on the kind of social worker I aspire to be one day.
